Chapter 11
Six hours later every ride had been ridden—many of them more than once—all of the food stands had been visited, and the PoofPasses were looking a little tarnished.
“I think I had too much fun,” Albert said, with a hand on his belly.
“Me too,” Janna said, looking as if she’d eaten worms.
“More! More! More!” Eugenie whacked them both with her cane.
“I can’t,” Albert groaned. “No. More. Roller. Coasters.”
“No. More. Sugar,” Janna said. “I think I need a chiropractor.”
“Weaklings!” Eugenie said, whacking again.
“Hey, stop it! Just because you look like a demented old lady doesn’t mean you get to act like one!”
“Where’s the fun in that? Come on! The lion feeding is in ten minutes.”
“Can I ask you something?” Janna said.
“You just did.”
“Why do you have that cane, when you obviously don’t need it to get around?”
Eugenie bent her knees and struck a pose, hands held above her head, the cane between them.
“Protection.”
“Of course.”
“Let’s just go lie on a beach for a little while,” Albert said. “Soak up the sun, listen to the surf.”
“That sounds good to me,” Janna said.
“What? You haven’t even been to the gift shops!” Eugenie said. “That’s not the Janna I know.”
Janna shook her head. “I…just want to rest. Albert’s right. I wish for us to be at a nice, calm, quiet beach.”
“Poof,” Eugenie said, and they lay on an empty white sand beach, a gentle surf lapping a few feet away. Janna looked at their shirts and shorts.
“I wish we had swimsuits!” she commanded, then shrieked. “Not a bikini!”
“And I don’t do Speedos!” Albert yelled.
“Youth is truly wasted upon the young,” Eugenie said. She snapped her fingers, clothing them in less revealing attire. For herself she chose a bright purple and gold lamé swim-dress, fire-engine-red lips and nails, and a large brimmed hat with several pieces of fruit attached.
“I do not believe you,” Janna said.
“Maybe you should put your coat back on,” Albert said.
“One of the advantages of being a couple of millennia old is that I am finally comfortable in my own skin,” Eugenie replied, leaning back and putting on an extremely large pair of sunglasses.
Eugenie snapped her fingers, and a man appeared in waiter’s attire, right down to a little bow tie. He sauntered up to them slowly, a tray in one hand, a towel draped over his arm.
“Where did he spring from?” Albert said.
“Yes, miss?” He bowed respectfully in front of Janna.
“Lemonade, please,” Janna said.
The waiter held his bow. Janna looked sideways at Eugenie.
“Wish it!” Eugenie mouthed.
Janna cleared her throat. “I wish for three lemonades. Fresh squeezed in fancy glasses with those little umbrellas in them.”
“Mademoiselle has excellent taste.” He gave a moue and then strutted away, a little stiff-legged.
“Why does he walk like that?” Janna asked.
“Did you, like…do something to him?” Albert asked. “He doesn’t look…quite normal.”
“Normal is relative, and we are in Florida,” Eugenie said. “But…I did tweak him just a little.”
“Wasn’t his nose…like, really huge?” Janna said.
“And where is he going to get our drinks? There’s no place around here,” Albert said.
